About the Event
Yadkin Riverkeeper (YRK) will hold a citizen hearing on the renewal of Alcoa Badin Business Park’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) stormwater permit. The meeting will highlight YRK’s and the Southern Environmental Law Center’s recommendations for the new permit. Representatives from Duke University’s Environmental Law and Policy Clinic will present historical and ongoing concerns about Alcoa’s inactive aluminum smelter site and hazardous waste disposal areas still leaching harmful pollutants (cyanide, fluoride, and aluminum) into Badin Lake and Little Mountain Creek, as well as environmental justice concerns related to the West Badin community.
The hearing will feature presentations by advocates, attorneys, scientists, and community leaders making the case for the state to require Alcoa to excavate the most dangerous of its hazardous waste sites. YRK, SELC and community groups are advocating that the NC Division of Water Resources (NCDWR) include more protective permit requirements and eliminate contaminated stormwater discharges into Badin Lake and Little Mountain Creek. Attendees will be provided with information to effectively participate in the official state public hearing on the draft permit, which is scheduled to be issued later this year. Beverages and light snacks will be served starting at 5:30 PM with meeting beginning at 6 PM.
Representatives from the following organizations will be participating in the hearing:
Yadkin Riverkeeper
Duke University Environmental Law and Policy Clinic
Southern Environmental Law Center
UNC School of Public Health

Members of the public also will have the opportunity to make comments during the meeting.
